End of Year Assessments

Year 7 - Julius Caesar

CASSIUS:
And why should Caesar be a tyrant then?
Poor man! I know he would not be a wolf,
But that he sees the Romans are but sheep:
He were no lion, were not Romans deer.
Those that with haste will make a mighty fire
Begin it with weak straws. What trash is Rome,
What rubbish, and what offal, when it serves
For the base matter to illuminate
So vile a thing as Caesar!

Read this speech by Cassius, then answer this question.

How does Shakespeare use language to show what Senators like Cassius feel about Caesar?

In your answer, think about...

  • What word choices does Shakespeare use, and what do they make us think of?
  • What images and metaphors are used?
  • What big ideas about Rome is Shakespeare talking about?

BEATRICE: I wonder that you will still be talking, Signior Benedick: nobody Levels you.
BENEDICK: What! my dear Lady Disdain, are you yet living?
BEATRICE: Is it possible Disdain should die while she hath such meet food to feed it as Signior Benedick? Courtesy itself must convert to disdain if you come in her presence.
BENEDICK: Then is courtesy a turncoat. But it is certain I am loved of all ladies, only you excepted; and I would I could find in my heart that I had not a hard heart; for, truly, I love none.
BEATRICE: A dear happiness to women: they would else have been troubled with a pernicious suitor. I thank God and my cold blood, I am of your humour for that. I had rather hear my dog bark at a crow than a man swear he loves me.
